Protecting consumers from unsafe products must always be seen as an absolute priority in the UK and, indeed, around the world.

This is why we were keen to see the results of a recent parliamentary publication. This publication has highlighted a number of flaws and matters to be addressed to ensure that the public is properly protected from harm. We will take a brief look at the headings in terms of the areas of concern, and give our expert take on things.

In terms of action for justice, we remind people that we can represent victims of harm caused by products on a No Win, No Fee basis.

Issues protecting consumers from unsafe products

According to a recent parliamentary publication, a number of issues and concerns have been raised in respect of difficulties in terms of protecting consumers from unsafe products. These include:

  1. A lack of data that is needed to proactively identify and address risks from unsafe goods.
  2. Difficulties reaching some businesses and consumers to prevent harm from unsafe products.
  3. Insufficient coordination between parties involved, as well as with the government.
  4. Gaps in the regulatory framework, which can make it harder to protect consumers from new risks of emerging markets and technologies.
  5. A lack of capacity and skills in the regulatory system.
  6. A lack of clear vision and planning from the government.

You can read more in the publication that the above is sourced from here.

The Group Action Lawyers take

We have been involved in group actions that have arisen from people coming to harm from dangerous products for many years. We have seen the first-hand impact on people when there is not enough being done in terms of protecting consumers from unsafe products.

We have seen it with the PIP implant scandal that arose in 2011/2012. We see it time and time again with the vaginal mesh and hernia mesh problems that many people still face. We saw it with the metal-on-metal hip implant issues also. As has happened in many of the cases here, real people have suffered real damage, and real lives have been changed for the worse; in some cases, forever.

As such, protecting consumers from unsafe products must be seen as an absolute priority in this country. The issues addressed in the recent parliamentary publication simply must be resolved as soon as possible to avoid people being harmed.

As lawyers working in this area of law, we are constantly aware of ‘the next big issue’ to hit the headlines. Whilst we never want to see people harmed at all, we have to expect that something will happen because of how frequent these big issue scandals can occur. Prevention is the key, but swift action needs to be taken and it needs to be taken effectively if a problem is identified. This is for all our protection, so it is clear that things need urgently tightening up.
