About the Virgin Media data group action

The Virgin Media data leak was discovered in early 2020 by a third-party security researcher who alerted the telecoms provider to an unsecured database that was accessible online. It transpired that the database was accessible due to a configuration error, and that it had been accessible online for a period of 10 months between April 2019 and February 2020.

As it was left unsecured for such a long period of time, it was understood that at least one unknown third party accessed the information that had been exposed.

The database contained the details of some 900,000 people, most of whom were customers of Virgin Media. As well as personal details for those who were affected, in some cases, there was also sensitive information about requests to block or unblock explicit websites.

What you could be entitled to claim

Pursuing your Virgin Media data breach compensation claim with us is a legal case for damages for any distress that you have suffered from as a result of what has happened. If you suffered any losses or incurred any expenses, these can be factored into a case, although most people will pursue a case just for the distress alone.

The distress is for the loss of control of your personal information and how this has personally affected you. The GDPR can entitle you to claim compensation for such distress, and a victim pursuing a claim where personal contact information has been exposed and/ misused could be entitled to recover thousands of pounds in damages.

When news of the breach first emerged, our Group Action Lawyers put an initial potential estimate on claims of up to around £5,000 depending on the nature of the impact to the victim. How much a claim will actually be worth will depend on the nature of the information that has been exposed and the context in terms of how this affected you, which can differ greatly from person to person.

The important thing is that you could be entitled to join the group action now on a No Win, No Fee basis. As such, a key question to ask yourself is: what do you have to lose?
