Samsung are recalling 2.8 million washing machines following 9 reports of injuries

Samsung do not appear to be having a great year…

Following the mass recall of the ‘exploding’ Samsung Galaxy Note 7 mobile phones, they have now had to recall 2.8 million washing machines in the U.S., with reports that machines have caused injuries to consumers.

What a nightmare!

Washing machines causing injuries

Samsung’s latest issue involves top-loading washing machines.

Following 9 reported injuries, including a broken jaw, injured shoulder, and other impacts and fall-related injuries, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has published a report explaining the potential dangers and risks associated with the machines. In particular, the top of the machine was capable of detaching whilst in use. This is of course a massive cause for concern as it poses a serious risk of injury to consumers from the impact.

Recalls

There were around 733 reports of the machine excessively vibrating, with some of them reporting that the tops had detached. It’s difficult to ascertain the number of machines that are capable of becoming detached while in use – as a safety precaution, Samsung has recalled 2.8 million machines.

There could be more machines affected of course…

Affected models

As with many gadgets and home appliances, there are several models. Samsung’s recall involves 34 models which were sold between March 2011 and November 2016.

Model numbers and serial information can be found on labels usually located on the back of the machine.

Samsung’s remedies

Samsung has sought to remedy the product failure by offering a choice of three options. They are allowing the consumers to choose between:

  • A free in-home repair that includes reinforcement of the washer’s top and a free one year extension of the manufacturer’s warranty;
  • A rebate to be applied towards the purchase of a new Samsung or other brand washing machine, along with free installation of the new unit and removal of old unit;
  • A full refund for consumers who purchased their washing machine within the past 30 days of the recall announcement.

Although Samsung has sought to remedy the problem, consumers should be entitled to more for any injuries sustained from faulty machines. Samsung has potentially put their consumers at risk of injury which could, in the worst case scenario, be fatal!

Samsung’s credibility

As you know, this is not the first time Samsung has had to recall a product.

Are there any more hidden in the woodwork?

It would not surprise me if that was the case. There is no doubt that their reputation and quality of their products has been damaged off the back of the horrendous exploding phone situation, and now these washing machines.
