Last year, a Class 1 Medicines Recall was initiated by Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). About the recall and the valsartan side effects

The recall was initiated last year, and although valsartan side effects can be numerous, what we need to look out for is anything untoward that may be related to the potential contamination issue.

In terms of the recall, urgent action was to be taken, and it affected all products in Europe. The possible contamination is for NDMA (nitrosodimethylamine). NDMA can be both carcinogenic (potentially causing cancer) and genotoxic (can adversely affect cells).

As such, this recall is incredibly serious.

Last year’s alert was for Valsartan supplied by Actavis Group PTC (now Accord) and Dexcel Pharma Ltd. This remains an emerging issue, and investigations remain ongoing.

Anyone who has suffered with valsartan side effects should immediately seek medical advice and should of course follow the guidance issued by healthcare organisations involved. Alternative blood pressure medication will likely need to be provided.
