Unomedical concentration oxygen mask recalled over dangerous defect
Unomedical concentration oxygen masks provide vital oxygen for patients. However, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has found that a manufacturing fault could be disrupting supply, which could lead to oxygen deprivation for patients using the faulty oxygen masks.
This has led to an increased risk of Hypoxia (deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues).
Manufacturer ConvaTec issued a voluntarily recall on 10th May 2017 over concerns of health risks to patients. ConvaTec also distributes the affected oxygen masks to multiple countries in several European countries as well as Rwanda and Saudi Arabia, making this a far-reaching issue.

Exploding Takata airbags: many millions involved in recalls
There have been multiple calls to get Takata inflators out of vehicles and off the roads for several years, and after a crash where a Takata airbag reportedly nearly caused a woman’s death, these calls are getting louder.
Karina Dorado’s trachea was reportedly punctured by shrapnel from a Takata inflator. The crash, which happened on 3rd March 2017 in Las Vegas, should’ve been just a minor collision, but things escalated quickly. Ms Dorado was rushed into a trauma centre where surgeons removed pieces of the airbag device that had damaged her vocal cords.
She is still being treated for neck injuries.

All batches of Reflection’s dead blow mallets are to be quarantined and returned to the manufacturer due to lead beads escaping into surgical wounds.
All of the dead blow mallet hammers manufactured by Smith and Nephew have been recalled after reports of broken mallet heads were made.
The dead blow mallets are different to conventional hammers as they are made to apply more precise pressure and less damage to the surface struck. The minimal elastic rebound is usually created by leaving the hammer head hollow or filled with loose sand, steel beads, or lead beads. However, this means that, if they break or crack, the filling could spill out, and this has resulted in the recall.

Recalls issued for 2016-17 Hyundai Tuscan and the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported that Hyundai Motor America will be recalling two models of their vehicles after a defect in the brake light was found. The two car models affected are:
- 2016 – 2017 model Hyundai Tuscan
- 2017 model Hyundai Santa Fe
It’s believed there are 5,669 of these two models currently registered in the U.S. and it’s unclear how many of these cars are currently being used in the U.K.! Hyundai has so far yet to comment on whether the cars here are affected and will be needing repaired.

Hoya Surgical Optic Intraocular Lenses Recall
Back in 2013, Hoya group initiated a recall when it was reported that users were having adverse effects from surgically implanted optic lenses.
These lenses are like permanent contact lenses that are fused onto the eye. It’s a medical device commonly used for patients with cataracts or myopia where the lens may have deteriorated. However, many users came forward saying they had symptoms such as:
- Discomfort
- Redness of the eye
- Loss of vision
Toyota has voluntary recalled 838,000 Sienna vehicles
Toyota is the latest automaker to recall some of their vehicles for a problem with their sliding doors. The recall is thought to be for 838,000 Sienna minivans worldwide, with affected models ranging between the years 2011 and 2016.
The issue is believed to relate to the electrical system for the sliding doors. The problem and danger with the sliding door is that, if it’s obstructed on opening, it could overload the door’s motor circuit and open a fuse. If this happens when the door is closed, there is the risk that the door may slide open while on the road.

Following the mass recall of the ‘exploding’ Samsung Galaxy Note 7 mobile phones, they have now had to recall 2.8 million washing machines in the U.S., with reports that machines have caused injuries to consumers.

Thousands of recalls for drugs manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical plants in India and Hungary
Regulators have recently raised concerns surrounding Sun Pharmaceutical’s plants in India and Hungary.
12,000 bottles of beta blocker have been recalled voluntarily by the company when some of the products failed impurities and degradation testing. The mass recall may give rise to legal proceedings if any customer who has bought a potentially defect product from them has had any issues.

Mazda recalling up to 42,000 vehicles that may have an airbag dysfunction
There always seems to be a recall in the automotive industry!
One of the latest is yet another problem with airbags for Mazda vehicles, as Mazda North American Operations announces an airbag recall for its Mazda 6 model produced from 4th February 2008 to 3rd December 2009.
