The levels of a slime borax ingredient contained in the popular children’s toy has been found to be at potentially ‘toxic’ levels in eight of the leading slime products.
According to research conducted by consumer action group Which?, eight of the 11 leading slime products tested contained amounts of boron – a chemical in borax – deemed to be unsafe, leaving children at risk of irritation, diarrhoea, vomiting and cramps.
According to the research, the levels of the dangerous chemical may not be clearly listed on the ingredients and may be described as ‘contact lens solution’ which contains borax.
Slime borax levels unsafe in eight leading products
Eight of the leading products tested by Which? were found to contain unsafe levels of the chemical that can be dangerous to children’s health.
The ‘slime borax’ levels in the following products have been said to be potentially ‘toxic’:
- Brezeh Free Slime by Brezeh (Orange);
- Crystal Slime Magic Clay by Baker Rose (Pink);
- Fluffy Slime by LOYO (Blue);
- Fluffy Slime by CCINEE (Pink);
- Jupiter juice by Toysmith (Pink);
- My Fluffy Slime by Virtuotrade (Green);
- Slime Toy by iBase Toy (Purple).
Details of the research has been passed over to the Office for Product Safety and Standards with calls for “fundamental changes” to be made to avoid children being put at risk to potentially ‘toxic’ slime borax levels in the future.
The dangers of slime borax levels to children
Borax in slime is used to keep it sticky, and it’s the chemical boron that’s contained within borax that can be dangerous. Unsafe amounts of ‘slime borax’ levels can be dangerous as the chemicals within borax are linked to irritation, diarrhoea, vomiting and cramps.
The findings of the research may well take the shine of the increasingly-popular slime products that are all the rage right now. As well as the leading products involved in the research, which are all readily available on Amazon, some home-made slime kits are also said to contain slime borax levels that are deemed as potentially dangerous.
