Celebrity endorsed hair care brand Wen<\/em> has arguably done anything but<\/em> deliver on the promise to ‘cleanse and condition the hair simultaneously’.<\/p>\n

With more than 21,000 complaints lodged, and over 200 people reportedly affected in the United States, Wen hair products have allegedly made one of many woman’s worst nightmares come true – it allegedly made their hair fall out.<\/p>\n

The damage the product has allegedly caused to women ranges from bald spots to complete baldness, and also causing scalp irritation and hair discolouration. This has led to women being unable to leave their houses and suffering depression.
\n<\/p>\n

Possibly tens of thousands of people claiming<\/h2>\n

200 people in the United States have filed a class action lawsuit against Wen, and it is believed that there could potentially be ‘thousands or tens of thousands’ consumers who have suffered because of the product.<\/p>\n

Wen has been extremely successful since its launch, raking in $100 million dollars in its second year with many positive reviews on sites like Amazon, where it enjoyed top ratings. With celebrity endorsements and good customer reviews, the product has clearly not had a negative effect on absolutely everyone. However, for the ones it has allegedly caused problems for, it has been serious.<\/p>\n

Last month, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety alert on the product, but that’s all it could do for now. The administration does not have the power to order a recall of cosmetics unlike with pharmaceuticals, and all the FDA can do is monitor complaints submitted on its website and decide whether to investigate.<\/p>\n

An unregulated industry<\/h3>\n

The cosmetic industry is often largely unregulated here in the UK and in the U.S. and there is now a push by congress members to strengthen the power of FDA to test ingredients in beauty products, and recall any deemed unsafe. New legislation could require cosmetic companies to notify the FDA of any ‘serious adverse’ reactions to be submitted on annual reports. The bill is endorsed by many big brands such as Estee Lauder, Johnson & Johnson, and Procter and Gamble.<\/p>\n

Here in the UK, with huge cosmetic industry catastrophes like the PIP Breast Implant Scandal<\/a> – where we have helped women recover millions of pounds for substandard breast implants – calls for tighter regulation is still a fight we’re at the heart of.<\/p>\n

Wen’s marketing agency, Guthy-Renker, released a statement saying: <\/p>\n

“There is no scientific evidence to support or claim that our hair care products caused anyone to lose their hair. There are many reasons why individuals may lose their hair, all unrelated to Wen hair products.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Guthy-Renker are contesting the allegations made against the products.<\/p>\n

However, Guthy-Renker have agreed to a $26.25 million settlement that is awaiting approval by a federal judge. The settlement would repay $25 to anyone who purchased the products and up to $20,000 to anyone who experiences an adverse reaction.<\/p>\n
