The allegations in summary <\/strong><\/h3>\n

Although the allegations vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, in essence, the suspected carmakers have been accused of allegedly manipulating vehicles in order to cheat emissions tests. In particular, a large number of manufacturers are suspected of allegedly installing illegal defeat devices in their engines, which could allow vehicles to \u201crecognise\u201d that they are undergoing emissions testing. In response, the cars could then bring emissions output under control and in compliance with regulatory limits, yet they could be free to break these limits when being driven in real-world conditions.<\/p>\n

The controversy of the emissions scandal is twofold. On the one hand, cheating emissions tests means that many diesel vehicles may have been hugely exacerbating pollution levels, emitting far more NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions than we previously understood.
