The latest Johnson & Johnson talcum powder cancer trial in the US has concluded with the victim awarded $40m in damages.<\/p>\n

The Claimant alleged that his mesothelioma – an aggressive and incurable cancer – was caused by long-term use of J & J talc. In light of key expert evidence that indicated there can be trace amounts of asbestos contained in talcum powder<\/a>, he has won his case.<\/p>\n

There are currently thousands of similar lawsuits<\/a> in the US, and our Group Action Lawyers are ready to investigate UK cases also.

\nIt’s not the first case of its nature, and it’s a matter J & J have been robustly trying to defend. According to the evidence in the cases, the materials for talc are mined in close proximity to asbestos, and it’s thought that talcum powder has therefore been contaminated with trace amounts of lethal asbestos.<\/p>\n

It’s the fine fibres of asbestos that can lead to mesothelioma, and the basis of the legal claims against Johnson & Johnson are for the irreversibly damaging and life-shortening impact mesothelioma has.<\/p>\n

The damages awarded are to be paid predominantly by J & J, and with part of the money coming from a supplier of the product as well.<\/p>\n

Did J & J cover the dangers up?<\/h2>\n

Part of the complaint says that J & J intentionally covered up the fact that they knew their talc product could be dangerous<\/a>. <\/p>\n

They allegedly may have used tests for safety and regulatory purposes that specifically would not identify asbestos in the product, despite an internal memo from a scientist in 1969 that reportedly suggested that asbestos contamination in talc could occur.<\/p>\n

What about J & J talc in the UK?<\/h3>\n

This latest settlement may lead to more claims being made. Here in the UK, we are on hand for advice and can assesses potential cases for representation.<\/p>\n

Although the laws are different here in the UK, if it is the case that UK talcum products contain trace amounts of asbestos, there may be cases to answer for here as well.<\/p>\n
